Hartford Foundation College Scholarship Program

Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has established a scholarship program to assist high school seniors living in or attending school in the Greater Hartford region who plan to continue their education in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited four-year college or university.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Since 1942, individuals and organizations of all types have trusted the Hartford Foundation to create scholarship funds for local students.

Applicants to the Hartford Foundation College Scholarship Program must be:

  • Graduating high school seniors who live in or attend school in the Greater Hartford region*.
  • Planning to enroll full-time at an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Be in the top third of class with a good academic record
  • Be an active volunteer in school, community, or other extracurricular activities.
  • Demonstrate financial need.

*Eligible Greater Hartford Region Towns
The following are eligible towns in the Greater Hartford Region: Amston, Andover, Avon, Bloomfield, Bolton, Broad Brook, Canton, East Granby, East Hartford, East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield, Farmington, Glastonbury, Granby, Hartford, Hebron, Manchester, Marlborough, Newington, North Granby, Rockville, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Somers, South Glastonbury, South Windsor, Suffield, Tariffville, Tolland, Unionville, Vernon, Weatogue, West Granby, West Hartford, West Simsbury, West Suffield, Wethersfield, Windsor, and Windsor Locks.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $3,000 renewable award. Between 50 and 60 scholarships may be granted.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Finalist and Recipient Selection

Finalists will be notified in mid-May through their school counselor, or by email from Scholarship America, that they have been selected as a finalist. Finalists will be interviewed by a volunteer representative from the Hartford Foundation.

Non-finalists will be notified by Scholarship America via email by mid-May that they will not be receiving a scholarship award.

The selection of recipients and fund determination is made by the Hartford Foundation. Not all finalists will receive an award. All finalists will receive notification of their application status by late-June. Recipients will receive an award notification. Non-recipients will receive a declination letter.

 

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  1. Required: FAFSA Materials
    • Your FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS)*

OR, if you have not received your FSS by the application deadline (4/15):

    • Your FAFSA confirmation email with estimated Student Aid Index (SAI), or
    • A screenshot that shows, or an explanation that describes, what stage of processing your FAFSA is in and why.
  1. Required: Parent/Legal guardian 1040 tax form
    • Pages 1 and 2 only of your parent(s)/legal guardian(s) 2022 1040 tax form.
  2. Optional: Consideration for award from the Walter “Doc” Hurley Scholarship Fund for Greater Hartford
    • If you wish to be considered for an award from this fund, the following are additional criteria:
      • Participation in a wide variety of scholastic and other extracurricular activities
      • Recommendation from your high school vice principal, your school counselor, or a community leader
      • Essay: Tell us why you deserve an award from the Walter “Doc” Hurley Scholarship Fund for Greater Hartford

*You have until 4/30/24 to upload your FSS to Scholarship America’s Hub, if you did not submit it with your application. Log into the Hub Documents page, choose Document Type as Financial and upload your FSS. Send an email to hartfordfoundation@scholarshipamerica.org indicating you have uploaded it in your Hub documents.

Your high school guidance counselor must upload the following:

  1. Your transcript
  2. Letter of recommendation

IMPORTANT NOTE: After providing your high school guidance counselor’s email address in the Recommendation section of the application, they will receive an email from Scholarship America that will allow them to confidentially upload your transcript and a letter of recommendation.

The transcript and letter of recommendation must be submitted by your high school guidance counselor (recommender) on your behalf no later than April 18, 2024 4:00 pm Eastern Time.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
